The Opening of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Institute at TCH

In late 2008 Legacy Multimedia was chosen by the Blue Bird Circle to create a video for their 2008 gala honorees. That year they honored Jan and Dan Duncan and their gift of 50 million dollars to Texas Children’s Hospital but the building of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Institute, a research institute focused on working across a spectrum of diseases including autism, epilepsy, Rett syndrome, cerebral palsy, ataxias and Batten disease. According to the World Health Organization, more than one billion people worldwide, including 300 million children, suffer from some form of neurological disease. With neurological disease more common than cancer or heart disease combined, this institute will provide vital research into the causes of these diseases.

Last week I attended the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the Institute. The building is amazing, so much better than any of the water-color renditions we used in making the video. There are already researchers at work in brand new, state-of-the-art laboratories, working on a model of collaboration among researchers that is unique to the medical world, and their excitement and passion as they talked about the challenge ahead was inspiring.

Sadly, three people involved in this enterprise passed away during the time period from vision to inception. They were acknowledged and remembered in reception speeches and remarks and I found myself once again, recognizing how tenuous life is and how legacies in our name and vision are the only things we have that live on after we are gone. Fortunately, we were also able to help in creating a tribute for Dan Duncan after he passed away. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience Dan and Jan’s passion and see their dream become reality.
