October is Family History Month

Today officially marks the first day of “Family History Month.” In 2003 the United States Senate officially recognized October as National Family History Month, a time “to encourage family history research, education, and the sharing of knowledge.”

President George W. Bush, in signing a Proclamation in support of Family History Month in 2003, said, “Lessons in family lineage are often lessons in courage, endurance, and love. While tracing our roots can be challenging, the rewards can be great – affirming our pride in our history and keeping us mindful of the sacrifices of our forbears.”

Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, sponsor of this bill (S.R. 160) said in designating October as “Family History Month,” “Millions of Americans are researching the history of their families. Experts say that in the United States, genealogy is now the second most popular hobby next to gardening. It is believed that more that 80 million Americans are currently actively searching for more information about their ancestors. It is only natural that we want to find out more about our ancestors,” Hatch continued. “What better way to bring families closer together than by discovering more about the story of their own family? Like it or not, who we are today is in large part, a product of our ancestors.”

Whether you hire us or take this project on yourself, consider spending some time this month getting to the grass-roots knowledge of your family tree. We have some great articles on our Blog like “What Makes a Good Biography or Autobiography“and “The Three Dynamics of Personal Histories” which should help you get started.

Be sure to leave a comment here on what things you are doing with your family this month. Often reading other people’s ideas can inspire us to do something of our own!
